Review: Remember how it felt to read The Babysitters Club all those years ago? You wanted to be just like the members of the group and hold your own meetings, right? Well, The Lonely Hearts Club will leave you feeling much the same with this updated version of the club for grown up readers.

The Lonely Hearts Club didn't initially cross my radar as a must-read, I thought it'd be a fun, light book so I left it sitting on my shelf unread for quite some time. Boy, was I wrong, it went above and beyond my expectations.

Penny Lane has grown up with Beatles fanatics for parents and while this has been slightly embarrassing for her as a child, some of her best memories come floating back to her when she hears the lyrics and melody to many classic Beatles tunes.

This, combined with the fact that Penny Lane has gone through a bad break-up recently and is sick of all her friends being treated badly by guys stems The Lonely Hearts Club. A group for girls to declare their independence from the male population until the end of their high school years. In return, they receive support and fair-treatment from their fellow female members with every aspect of their lives plus a regular date on Saturday nights with the club.

What Penny Lane does not plan on is finding a deserving and trustworthy boyfriend in the process which leads her to rethink the whole idea behind The Lonely Hearts Club. What follows is a look at what can happen when shy, underachieving girls can be like when they stand up for themselves and find their own presence in the hallways.

I enjoyed Elizabeth Eulberg's debut and wish I'd picked it up earlier. It's really a celebration of girl spirit and a re-think for anyone who has ever ditched their friends to hang out with a boyfriend. I can't wait to read Eulberg's next novel Prom and Prejudice in January 2011.
